August 2011   Volume 32, No. 8

 Arlen Daleske, Interim Pastor

 Welcome, Manny, Jenalee and Family!

As was mentioned last month, Manny Garcia has been a part of Iowa Yearly Meeting for the last two years as the full time youth pastor at Middle River Friends of Carlisle. He and his family originate from Hutcheson, KS where Manny and Jenalee grew up. He was raised a self-proclaimed “not so very good Catholic.” His life changed after his conversion experience about eight years ago at the Hutchinson Friends Church where Jenalee’s father is the pastor.  Manny felt called to attend Barclay College in Haviland, KS in 2005 and earned his BA degree in Pastoral Ministry and Bible in 2009. While there, he was a youth volunteer at the Haviland Friend’s Church, a small group leader at Barclay, a summer youth intern in Hutchinson, and the youth director at Pratt Friends during his last two years of school. (One of the many excellent references we received about Manny came from Emma Macy, who had some interaction with him while they were both students at Barclay.)

He is scheduled to start work on his Master’s degree in Transformational Leadership this fall through Barclay’s online program. In his spare time Manny loves to play and coach soccer, run, lift weights and dabble a little with computers. (He hadn’t been in the sanctuary two minutes before I shanghaied him the Sunday he came to candidate because I needed help with the laptop to get the songs displayed for that Sunday’s worship service.)

Besides Jenalee’s fulltime job as a mom, she works online for Mercy Hospital in their billing department. She enjoys photography in her spare time.

Our tentative plans are to help move them into the parsonage sometime between the 10th and the 13th after his commitment with Middle River is completed. They have been very busy with painting in the parsonage and getting their home in Carlisle ready to rent. After throwing in some time to attend Yearly Meeting sessions from the 4th to the 7th it has become very clear that they might be a little tired by that weekend. We thought it might be best to use the morning worship on Sunday the 14th as a time of dedication for Manny and his family before he “officially” starts his ministry with us on the 15th.  Plan to come and join in this time of worship, dedication and, oh yes, a potluck meal for fellowship afterwards. We’ll probably all be ready for a little downtime ourselves after a full week of VBS!

Come join us on the 14th to welcome our new Pastor and Family!

Our adventure begins with staff devotions at 6:00 each evening August 8th-11th.  All family and friends are encouraged to attend the closing program and free picnic at 6:15 Friday, August 12th.  Invite kids age 3 through grade 6 to join us for a stuPANDAous week and keep the kids and staff in your prayers.  We look forward to seeing God work during these special evenings together!

It’s Back to School Time!

The House of Compassion is collecting school supplies to distribute to needy children. Last year they helped over 900.  Items needed: wide line notebook paper, 3-ring notebooks, pocket folders, facial tissue, pointed scissors, erasable pens, spiral notebooks, wide line washable markers, erasers and colored pencils.  Bring items or funds by August 12th (or during VBS) to “Stuff the Bus” in our entryway.

Bangor USFW

We will meet at 1:30 p.m. on August 16th at the Iowa River Hospice Home for a tour.  Shirley and Betty will bring refreshments to be served at our meeting.  As usual, all women are welcome.

Attention Parents:

Children’s Church will resume on August 21st and continue meeting twice a month through the school year.  Children who are age 4 through grade 4 are welcome to participate.  They will be dismissed to the fellowship hall following the children’s message part of the worship service.  The program includes Bible lessons, service projects to our church and community, crafts, lessons about famous Friends and activities to encourage the children as they learn to live like Jesus.  If you have any questions, please ask.  I consider it a privilege to have this time with your children.  -Margaret Good

Meals from the Heartland

Starvation is real. We can help. The Annual Hunger Fight at Hy-Vee Hall is August 31-September 3.  Time is of the essence to raise the funds to purchase raw materials for the meals.  For every package of food made, they must raise $1.20 for the food ingredients, supplies and shipping needed to get the meals to a hungry person in Iowa or around the world.  One cup of coffee ($1.50) would feed about 7 people.  A $6 lunch could feed 30 people.

The goal at this year's Annual Hunger Fight is to package 4 million meals! Registration will open on August 1st.  If you are interested in packaging meals at Hy-Vee Hall contact Margaret so dates can be chosen.

BLFC Family Camp Sept. 9-10-11, 2011

Family Camp is planning an 1800's Camp this year at Camp Quaker Heights.  We are in the process of planning craft and activities for the weekend and a list of supplies follows that we are looking for.  If you have any of these items and would like to donate to the Family Camp we would greatly appreciate it.  If you have any suggestions or have a skill that reflects this time frame, like horse shoeing, quilting etc. we would be very happy if you could share your talent with us.

Items Needed

White pillowcases - these are to make old- fashioned pillowcase dolls.  If the pillowcase has the lace at the opening it makes the doll look like it's in a christening gown.

Polyester stuffing for dolls

Clean baby food jars- to make butter

Candle making supplies- wax, wick materials

Soap making supplies-molds, glycerin, scents

Sling shots

Metal rims from old wagon wheels

Any of these items can be given to Beth Moore, Janet Klein or Jolene Nolta.  Thanks for all your support.  The Family Camp Committee.

Also a reminder that the Committee is asking for any pictures of family members who might have attended Bangor or Liberty churches many years ago.  They plan to make copies of the pictures for a display at Family Camp.

Missions

Kids to Kids is $$ from kids (people) in the U.S. for kids (goats) at Friends Theological College.  The dairy goat project will enable students to provide 50 percent of FTC’s income so that the college can continue in its accreditation process.  Please be generous as we collect funds during VBS.  Donations will not only be used to purchase goats, but also to buy materials to build pens, food storage containers and to provide secure lighting.    Remember to pray for Kaimosi Friends Hospital and give financially on the 3rd Sunday to support the staff and help pay for the repairs needed to keep the hospital functioning.

HOC Meal Report

On July 28, 19 from BLFC were involved in providing a meal for 53 guests.  The menu was fish patties, macaroni & cheese, mini carrots, greens beans with mushroom soup & bacon, cottage cheese, fresh tomatoes, mixed fruit, various leftover salads, chocolate pudding, cookies or cake, milk, iced tea and coffee.  Everyone was happy to come in out of the heat and enjoy a good meal.  Many voiced their appreciation.  Come join the fun next month on Aug. 25.  You’re sure to receive a blessing.

Library Ledge -

Summertime Audios & Videos

Are you traveling this summer?  Take along a book-on-tape, CD or DVD from our church library.  Or enjoy one while you are doing projects, riding a bike or driving to town.  We have a handy source of entertainment and encouragement for all ages.  Jonah, A Veggie Tales Movie; The Book of Revelation; Charlton Heston Presents The Word; Adventures in Odyssey; Life on the Lighter Side, and many more.

If it’s too hot to be outside, check out the videos or DVD’s.  New DVD’s include: The Climb is the harrowing story of two rock climbers who meet on a daring rescue. The man saved in the rescue is the son of a retail mogul who rewards them with a dream climb at Mount Chicanagua. The two highly esteemed climbers approach the sport very differently.

Frank Peretti presents Mr. Henry’s Wild & Wacky Bible Stories All About Obedience.  Mr. Henry explores obedience with an animated story about Jonah and the whale, a song with his bluegrass band, a mystery posed by his twin brother and a "spontaneous re-enactment" of the story of Adam and Eve.  For kids of all ages!
