Calvary

Jesus Christ, 33, of Nazareth, died Friday on Mount Calvary, also known as Golgotha, the place of the skull. Betrayed by the apostle Judas, Jesus was crucified by the Romans, by order of the Ruler Pontius Pilate.  The causes of death were crucifixion, extreme exhaustion, severe torture, and loss of blood.

Jesus Christ, a descendant of Abraham, was a member of the house of David.  He was the Son of the late Joseph, a carpenter of Nazareth, and Mary, His devoted Mother.  Jesus was born in a stable in the city of Bethlehem, Judea.  He is survived by His mother Mary, His faithful Apostles, numerous disciples, and many other followers.

Jesus was self educated and spent most of His adult life working as a Teacher.  Jesus also occasionally worked as a Medical Doctor and it is reported that he healed many patients.  Up until the time of His death, Jesus was teaching and sharing the Good News, healing the sick, touching the lonely, feeding the hungry, and helping the poor.

Jesus was most noted for telling parables about His Father’s Kingdom and performing miracles, such as feeding over 5,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish, and healing a man who was born blind.  On the day before His death, He held a Last Supper celebrating the Passover Feast, at which He foretold His death.

The body was quickly buried in a stone grave, which was donated by Joseph of Arimathea, a loyal friend of the family.  By order of Pontius Pilate, a boulder was rolled in front of the tomb.  Roman soldiers were put on guard.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that everyone try to live as Jesus did.  Donations may be sent to anyone in need.

Missions

Our 3rd Sunday mission giving now supports upkeep, equipment and salaries at the Kaimosi Friends Hospital in Kenya.  If you did not fill out a pledge card, you can still give by marking your check or envelope.

Following is recent news from Judy Davis who spent time working at the Hospital.  Check out new photos on our bulletin board and remember the hospital and staff in your prayers.

"Yesterday was a long day. I arrived home at 6:30 pm.  With the help of Eden Grace we hired 6 nurses realizing they all may leave in a year for the government hospitals but for the first time this year we are at the level of nursing required for the patients we have.  We had 29 patients including a c-section in late afternoon.  The doctor had to leave the management meeting to perform the surgery.  Nurses were running around looking for a special oxygen mask and tube for the baby.  Another case was a young woman whose husband had severely cut the back of her head with a panga (machete) and cut off two of her fingers.  She was probably defending herself.  She is so beautiful. She will go back to her husband and continue to be beaten.  It will not be the last time we see her, which is sad."

Amnesia: A condition that enables a woman who has gone through labor to consider a second child.

Feedback: The inevitable result when your baby doesn’t appreciate the strained carrots.

Grandparents: The people who think your children are wonderful even though they’re sure you’re not raising them properly.

Show-off: A child who is more talented than yours.

Whodunit: None of the kids who live in your house.

*Mark your calendars - BLFC Family Camp

will be held at Camp Quaker Heights,

   September 9-10-11.

Dear Friends of HOC,

The House of Compassion was formed in 1994 with a mission to provide emergency shelter to prevent homelessness; meals to those who are hungry; and assistance to those in need.  Thanks to the generosity of HOC volunteers, community members and businesses, HOC has been able to provide food, shelter and supplies to thousands of clients over the past 16+ years.  We are grateful to all who have donated supplies, time and money.  However, the need is still great and the mission is still important.

A donation to the HOC operating fund provides immediate budget dollars to support the mission of HOC.  A gift to the Keystone Endowment Fund means a permanent source of revenue for the HOC as all donations to the Keystone Fund are maintained intact and invested to create a source of income.

Your gift to the HOC operating fund or a gift to the Keystone Fund can be made by simply designating and mailing a gift to the House of Compassion, 211 W Church St, Marshalltown IA, 50158.

                        Jim Lowrance, HOC Board Pres.

Refiner’s Fire Bible Study

A refiner's fire does not destroy indiscriminately like a forest fire. A refiner's fire does not consume completely like the fire of an incinerator. A refiner's fire purifies. It melts down the bar of silver or gold, separates out the impurities that ruin its value, burns them up, and leaves the silver and gold intact. The Lord is like a refiner's fire. Beginning May 4th we will learn about 'The Shepherd's Crucible' from Psalm 23.  Next is 'The Crucibles that Come', 'The Birdcage', 'Seeing the Goldsmith's Face', and 'Extreme Heat'.  These are some of the 13 chapters we will discuss together.  All adults are welcome to participate at 7:00 in the church fellowship hall each Wednesday evening.

Library Ledge

During May the library ledge will display books by and about women.  If you are mother to a toddler, or grandmother to several, there are books for your needs.  We also have devotionals, books with humorous antidotes and biographies especially written to encourage women.

The Friendships of Women: All women should read this book because it tells the truth about how women's friendships should be. The book helps you to understand how to nurture your friendship to a healthy state.  It is centered on the friendships of the Bible and uses them as examples.
